I am now a full-time artist. It has only taken me forty years to be able to say that.
Forty years ago almost to the week I set off to art college to earn a degree in Graphic design. I had a vague idea I wanted to be either an illustrator or an animator. In the end I went for film making and animation. Somewhere along the way I took an interest in the fledgling computer graphics industry and found I had the patience and knack of teasing something creative out of these early systems.
Long story short. I have spent over thirty years helping creative people get the most out of their computer environments. In the background I still produced my own creative work but it was relegated second place to a career in publishing.
I appear to make changes by decades. Forty years ago off to college, ten years later a career in publishing, twenty years later I set up my own company and now forty years on another change.
Finally I can dedicate all my effort to doing what I enjoy most, being creative.
I have been building towards this goal my whole life so it feels very peculiar to be officially announcing I am now a full time artist. In truth I only feel able to do this because I’ve had a few artistic successes over the last few years. My first book cover, first album cover, TV work and now a secret film project. The imposter syndrome in me is still taunting, but that aside I’m here, doing art for a living.
Finally I can dedicate all my effort to doing what I enjoy most, being creative.
When I was five years old my grandmother bought me my first sketch book, (I still have it.) when I’d filled it I wrote on the last page, Sean Briggs artist. That five year old child still alive inside me is finally back on track.
I now intend to dedicate the next forty years of my life to being that artist or at least die trying. I’d like to invite you to follow that adventure.
Sean Briggs has spent 30+ years working in the publishing world. He now makes a living as a traditional and digital artist.
