Badgers are nocturnal members of the weasel family (Mustelidae) and are highly social, living in complex underground tunnel systems called setts. Their distinctive black and white striped face is thought to act as a warning coloration, or aposematism, to predators. They are omnivores, with earthworms making up the majority of their diet, but they also eat insects, fruits, and small mammals.
When I sketched this fleeting encounter, I felt the deep, ancient silence of the woods surrounding me, capturing the quiet dignity in his steady gaze. This piece embodies the hidden world just beyond our sight, a glimpse of the wild heart of the British countryside preserved forever in ink.
