Known locally as "Field Barns" or "Laithes," these structures are characteristic of the upland farming landscape of the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria. They were primarily built to house livestock (especially cattle) on higher ground during the winter and to store hay and fodder on the upper floor. Many surviving barns date back to the 17th and 18th centuries and are typically constructed using locally sourced stone.
Standing at the foot of the fells, this lone stone structure whispered tales of resilience against the harsh Cumbrian weather. Capturing its rough texture and timeless silence felt like preserving a piece of the landscape's deep, quiet soul.
