Dales barns, or 'field barns', are characteristic features of the Yorkshire Dales landscape, primarily constructed between the 17th and mid-19th centuries using local limestone. These structures were designed with two levels: the lower floor housed cattle, while the upper level stored winter fodder, often accessed via a central loading door large enough for a hay wagon.
I stood on the cold fellside, the wind biting as I captured the quiet resilience of this ancient stone structure, knowing each rough wall holds centuries of farming history. Painting these barns is a homage to the generations who shaped the very land they rest upon, linking us directly to the wild heart of the Dales.
The original artwork is ink and Windsor & Newton watercolour paints on Saunders Mill NOT 300 gsm watercolour paper. Signed and numbered.
