Dales barns are a distinctive feature of the Yorkshire Dales landscape, typically built of local stone, such as limestone or gritstone. Most were built between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries to house cattle on the ground floor and store hay above, reflecting the agricultural needs of the time. They are often called 'field barns' because they were situated high on the fields away from the main farmstead, allowing feed to be closer to the grazing animals during winter.
I am endlessly drawn to the resilience etched into these ancient stones, witnesses to centuries of harsh Dales weather and quiet labor. Capturing the texture and solitary nature of these buildings allows me to connect deeply with the profound, fading history of this unique landscape.
