European badgers are highly social animals that live in communal homes called setts, which can be massive, with multiple entrances and decades of history. They are primarily nocturnal and omnivorous, eating earthworms as a staple, supplemented by insects, small mammals, fruits, and bulbs. Their distinctive black and white striped facial markings are believed to act as a warning signal to other animals, visible even in low light.
I wanted to capture the quiet strength of the badger, illuminated only by a sliver of moonlight, hinting at the mystery of its twilight existence. The deep indigo wash reflects the ancient, hidden world it inhabits beneath the root systems of the oldest woods.
The original artwork is ink and Windsor & Newton watercolour paints on Saunders Mill NOT 300 gsm watercolour paper. Signed and numbered.
