Hawfinches possess one of the strongest bills relative to their body size of any European bird, capable of cracking seeds like cherry stones and olive pits.
Despite being relatively widespread across Europe and Asia, they are often difficult to spot as they are shy and tend to forage high in the canopy.
Their scientific name, Coccothraustes coccothraustes, means "kernel breaker" due to their powerful diet.
I remember the thrill of catching this elusive bird resting briefly on a winter branch, its massive beak a silent testament to its hidden strength. This sketch captures that moment of quiet, powerful presence, urging the viewer to appreciate the subtle beauty of nature's engineers.
