The Hazel Dormouse is often referred to as the sleeper because it hibernates for up to six months of the year, typically from October to April. They are strictly nocturnal creatures that spend the majority of their lives in the canopy of trees, rarely descending to the forest floor. As a protected species in the UK, their survival is closely linked to the preservation of hedgerows and woodlands.
