Herdwick sheep are a hardy breed native to the Lake District in North West England, known for their ability to thrive in harsh, mountainous conditions. Their fleece changes color as they age, starting dark brown or black as lambs and lightening to a greyish-white or "steekit" coat in adulthood. Herdwick sheep are famous for being "heafed" to the fells, meaning they have a natural instinct to stay on their home territory without the need for fencing.
