Lesser Celandine is one of the earliest spring flowers to bloom across temperate Europe, often appearing long before the trees gain their leaves. A member of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), it is notable for its shiny, bright yellow petals. Historically, it was used medicinally for treating haemorrhoids due to the Doctrine of Signatures, where its tuberous roots resemble the ailment.
I captured the delicate, root structure and the emerging blooms of this ephemeral spring flower. Drawing the Celandine always reminds me that even the smallest, earliest blooms possess a fierce determination to announce the new season.
