Ruins often serve as historical markers identifying past civilizations or land usage. These structures, built of unmortared stone, represent early architectural ingenuity in adapting to local geology. Many ruin sites provide unique micro-habitats for specialized lichen and moss species that thrive on weathered surfaces.  
I grew up around these particular ruins on the moors of West yorkshire, they were and remain a magical place to me.
