The subject is a pair of old hiking boots, an essential tool for wilderness exploration. Early hiking boots were historically made from heavy, durable leather and often featured metal hobnails on the soles to provide grip on challenging terrain. The 1930s introduction of the rubber-lugged Vibram sole fundamentally changed footwear design by offering vastly superior traction and durability for mountaineers.
