King Henry II built Orford Castle between 1165 and 1173 to establish royal control over East Anglia during a period of civil unrest. The keep has an innovative polygonal design with three massive rectangular towers projecting from a central circular core, making it a masterwork of 12th-century military architecture. According to medieval chronicles, a wild man covered in hair was captured near the town in the 12th century and imprisoned within the castle walls.
