Elterwater is named after the nearby lake, deriving its name from the Old Norse words 'eltr' (swan) and 'water' (lake), meaning 'swan lake'. The geology of the Langdale Valley, where Elterwater is situated, is characterized by volcanic rocks formed during the Ordovician period. The area is part of the Lake District National Park, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017.
