Storm petrels are among the smallest seabirds in the world, typically weighing less than 50 grams. They spend almost their entire lives airborne over the open ocean, often thousands of miles from land, only coming ashore to breed.
Their characteristic feeding behavior involves 'walking' or pattering across the water surface with their feet, which is believed to be the origin of their name, a reference to Saint Peter walking on water.
