Many traditional stone field barns date back to the 17th or 18th century, built primarily for storing hay and sheltering livestock during winter. They are often constructed using local, unmortared or dry stone techniques, making them incredibly resilient to harsh weather. Unlike typical farmsteads, field barns are isolated structures located away from the main farm buildings, often high up in grazing pastures.
I remember sketching this weathered beauty, feeling the weight of centuries in its stone walls, knowing that every crack and lichen patch tells a silent, enduring story of the landscape. It captures the rugged spirit of the hills, waiting patiently for the next season's shelter.
