The Eurasian Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is the only native squirrel species remaining in the UK, having been largely displaced by the introduced Grey Squirrel. They are primarily arboreal, meaning they spend most of their lives in trees, rarely coming down to the forest floor. Their bushy tail is crucial for balancing while leaping between branches and also provides vital warmth during the colder months.
I captured the fleeting moment this little creature paused on the trunk, its dark eyes sparkling with wild curiosity before it vanished into the canopy. This sketch represents the fragile beauty of our native wildlife and the urgent need to preserve these shy, magical encounters.
