Cononley is a village near Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales, an area historically significant for lead mining. Lead mining in this region, particularly around the Dales, peaked during the 18th and 19th centuries before declining due to falling lead prices.
The surviving ruins, like engine houses and chimneys, are remnants of the industrial heritage and often stand as protected ancient monuments.
I love capturing the quiet resilience of industrial ruins; standing on the moor, sketching these stones, I could almost hear the ghosts of the past echo in the wind. This piece is a tribute to the tenacious spirit of the workers who carved their livelihoods out of the harsh Yorkshire landscape, immortalizing their labor in ink.
