Hay is dried grass, legumes, or other herbaceous plants, primarily used as winter feed for livestock. Square bales, common in traditional harvesting, typically weigh between 40 and 60 pounds, making manual stacking a necessary and laborious chore. Although invented earlier, tractors only began replacing horses widely in farming after World War I, fundamentally changing agriculture.
This scene captures the sheer volume of labor and the vital importance of the harvest before the weather turns. I remember the smell of sun-baked hay and the race against time, a memory from my childhood of grit and community resilience I aimed to preserve in ink.
