Moorland ruins often mark the sites of historic sheep farming and agricultural expansion into upland areas during the 18th and 19th centuries. The stones used to build these structures were typically gathered directly from the surrounding moor to clear the land for grazing.
Changes in rural economics and mass depopulation eventually led to the abandonment of these remote upland outposts.
