Roseate Terns (Sterna dougallii) are considered one of the rarest breeding seabirds found in the UK and throughout parts of Europe. These birds are renowned for their long, pointed wings and a distinctively deeply forked tail, which grants them a sleek and aerodynamic appearance in flight. Their common name is derived from the faint pink blush that appears on their underparts during the breeding season, a coloration feature that is often difficult to observe outside of that time.
I watched this elegant creature slice through the coastal air, its form a perfect study in aerial grace, inspiring me to capture that fleeting moment of freedom. This sketch preserves the dynamic lightness of its wings against the blank canvas of the sky, a quiet testament to the enduring beauty of marine life.
