Despite their appearance, slow-worms are not snakes but are actually legless lizards that can shed their tails to escape predators. They are often found in gardens, woodlands, and heathlands across Europe and are known for their secretive, burrowing lifestyle. Slow-worms have movable eyelids and can blink, a distinct biological feature that differentiates them from true snakes.
I shave only ever seen one live slow worm in the wild and that was in Cumbria one of my favourite places to sketch.
