Despite their name, squat lobsters are more closely related to porcelain crabs and hermit crabs than to true lobsters. The Spiny Squat Lobster (Galathea strigosa) is native to the northeastern Atlantic Ocean, including the North Sea and the Mediterranean, living on rocky or shelly substrates. They typically hide in crevices or under rocks during the day and venture out to feed at night, primarily scavenging or filtering plankton.
I spent hours trying to capture the intricate, armored shell and those long, delicate antennae. This creature of the deep embodies the rugged mystery of the ocean floor, a silent warrior rendered in stark black and white.
