Wensleydale, located in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, is known for its distinct landscape shaped by glacial retreat. Many traditional farmhouses in the Yorkshire Dales are built from local limestone, often featuring mullioned windows and robust stone slate roofs.
The term "Dale" refers to a valley, and the name Wensleydale actually derives not from the River Ure, but from the village of Wensley, an unusual deviation among Yorkshire Dales.
I stood on that hillside feeling the immense quiet of the Dales, trying to capture the resilience of stone against the vast, open sky. This sketch embodies that feeling—the deep sense of heritage and isolation found only in the heart of Yorkshire.
